CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE
Public Health is defined as Public health is the science of protecting and improving the shape of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases (Dudley, Strunz, Roney, Wheeler, & Monroe, 2020)
Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world.
Of course, there is a great identification between the economy, the cultural and social values of the communities. In the case of San Diego, where almost 35% of the population is of Hispanic descent, and these factors must be evaluated to build a public health system that can include them. One of the big problems that San Diego Human and Health Services (HHS) are facing is that many of the county’s inhabitants do not have valid documents to stay or work in the country. That makes them ineligible to obtain medical services through Medicaid. Also the reality that medical coverage is very high, to get medical services through Kaiser for example, you need to pay more than 500 dollars a month, makes the majority of the Hispanic population prefer to remain without having medical insurance. For the 2020 plan year, the average monthly cost of health insurance in California is $576 for a 40-year-old. (Price, 2020)
The Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity epidemic is hitting the community very hard. Studies have also been conducted at the high school level where it was shown that almost 50% of minority populations have obesity, Body Metabolic Index (BMI) over 30, with which the future of our population looks bleak.(San Diego County Office of Education,2019)
