What kind of charge does oxygen have?
February 20th, 2023
Oxygen ions have a charge of -2.
Oxygen atoms have 8 protons and 8 electrons. Two electrons are located in the first energy level, and 6 electrons are located in the second energy level.
By adding two electrons to the second energy level, a more stable noble gas is achieved by the oxygen. Since no protons are added the overall charge is -2.
8 protons = +8
10 electrons = -10
Sum = -2
