The American Civil War lasted almost exactly four years. It began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops fired on U.S. troops in Ft. Sumter. Ft. Sumter is located in the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina.
Most historians agree that it ended on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to U.S. General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.
