in 100 words or more each with references and in text citations answer the 8 questions.
- What are the most important intermolecular forces? And what are the mechanisms by which these intermolecular forces work?
- What is hydrogen bonding and how might hydrogen bonding be used to explain the substantial difference in boiling between ethanol CH3CH2OH (grain alcohol) and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3)? A hydrogen bond is an attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen on one molecule and a slightly negative atom on another molecule. Hydrogen bonds are dipole-dipole forces. The large electronegativity difference between hydrogen atoms and several other atoms, such as fluorine, oxygen and nitrogen, causes the bond between them to be polar. I will look forward to hear from you all on this.
- Determine intermolecular forces present in molecules and compounds.
- Explain surface tension, viscosity, and capillary action.
- Explain vapor pressure, vaporization, sublimation and fusion.
- Explain heating curves and phase diagrams.
- Describe crystalline solids.
8. What are intermolecular forces and how do they compare to intra-molecular forces such as ionic or covalent bonding? What impact do intermolecular forces have on the melting point and the boiling point of a substance?
