The posts are as follows:POST 1:Use reference for this post- Kupperman: Major Problems in American Colonial History: Documents and Essays. Chapter 8 &10In the 17th and 18th centuries life was hierarchical. An individual’s place in the world was usually determined by his/her gender, religion, race, & family background. A person from a well-placed family was viewed as intrinsically superior to someone of “low birth.” Servants were therefore seen as lower types of person than those they served. Europeans viewed themselves as more “civilized” than other cultures they encountered, particularly Africans and Native Americans. In preparation for this discussion, read The Reverend Hugh Jones’ description of Virginia slavery on page 231 in Kupperman.Based on the philosophy outlined above, for your initial response, develop an argument that explains whether or not racial prejudice among English settlers was the primary basis for enslavement. That is, did race determine who would be enslaved, or were there other reasons that Africans were targeted as slaves than the fact that they were not Europeans? Support your answer with specific examples.Next, with reference to The Reverend Hugh Jones’ description of Virginia slavery, discuss with two other students whether you think Jones is for or against slavery. Use specific examples from his writing.POST 2:Slavery was not limited to the South but existed throughout the English colonies. Just as the economy differed from one colony to another, so too did the slave experience. In the North where large scale farming was limited and more urban centers existed, slaves were more likely to live and work in closer proximity to whites. Many Northern slaves were not agricultural workers but instead toiled as general laborers, dock workers, craftsmen, house servants, and at other similar jobs to the white indentured servants.Thinking about everything you have learned so far, if you were a slave during the 18th century, in which colony would you prefer to live? Consider not only geographical differences and climate but things like the types of work, living conditions, opportunities for social interaction and the possibility of personal growth. After posting your initial response, engage in discussion with two students who have chosen different colonies than you did, and support your choice with specific examples from our readings and the New York-Historical Society exhibit.POST 3:This activity will enable you to:Explain the concepts of diversity and inclusion in the context of a global society. You have read about the status of women and minority groups in the Revolutionary Era, as well as the role of religion in this time period. Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze (1851). Metropolitan Museum of Art. Wikimedia Commons. After completing your readings for this module, post a response to the following:Discuss the social environment at the time independence was declared. Describe class structure, worker conditions, and the status of women and minority groups.Describe ways in which the variety of religious sects influenced society.Substantiate your posting with references to historical events.POST 4:This activity will enable you to:Explain the concepts of diversity and inclusion in the context of a global society.During the Revolution, there were slaves in both Northern and Southern colonies. The patriot ideals of freedom and equality conflicted with the reality for slaves, something that the British tried to exploit. In spite of the fact that women actively supported the war effort, the ambiguity of their status was not addressed either. An icon of two dialogue bubbles symbolizing DiscussionAfter completing your readings for this module, post a response to the following:Discuss the plight of the slaves. What was the role of African-Americans in the Revolutionary War?What was the role of women? How was the condition of women related to the citizenship status of slaves?Substantiate your posting with references to historical events and actions.
