CRJ4100- Final Paper Due Wednesday 9PM

You will need to write an executive essay.  This essay is an issue that you have discovered within the workplace of the criminal justice system.  This issue can be problems within the organization that needs to be brought to the fore front, or a policy/procedure that needs to be changed or addressed, an issue where conflict has been occurring on a constant bases and how would this issue need to be mediated.  The decision is yours.  At a minimum the essay should:

Set forth what you believe about the issue.  Explain what you believe consciously and explicitly in light of the most important theories that you have studied.  You will need to take one of the positions of Mediation; an Advocate (Negotiator); Decision Maker (Arbitrator); Facilitator (Mediator); Information Provider (Expert) or; Observer (Witness, Audience)

Evaluate your own sense of responsibility—individually and institutionally.  Think through your own responsibility for the type of issue you have chosen.  What kind of responsibility do you have as an individual?  How do you see your position on this type of issue lived out in the real world?

Think through the institutional implications of your sense of responsibility.  Ask yourself the hard questions of what it means to take your vision of what is real and true and right into the public square.  This is perhaps, the most difficult task of all, i.e., translating individual beliefs into institutional responsibility.  In other words, consider the connection between your sense of responsibility and that of one or two institutions, such as business, government, school, or the community at large.

Draw upon the resources.  You need to wrestle with your own way of making sense of complex questions like the one you have chosen, and to do so by seriously interacting with the course material.  ( in other words, you must have quotes from your textbook).  You will need to give evidence that you have substantively and seriously read the course material as you unfold your own convictions and beliefs about the issue.

Interview one “stakeholder” (outside person) in the debate over your chosen issue.  As the pre-suppositional questions which get to the whys and wherefores of the person’s position.  Draw their thinking into your background study of the public debate.

Requirements:  Your essay must be concise and compact—i.e., not more than three (3) pages in length, not counting title page, endnotes, and reference page.  Standard format is typed, 11cpi or 12 cpi, double spaced, one (1) inch margins, and numbered pages.  Include in your references of your sources used whether cited or not.  This essay must be in the APA 6th Edition format.  You will need a minimum of eight (8) sources.  Only two (2) can be Internet sources.

The Rubric will be APA Format, Title Page Elements, Abstract, Clear and Concise/Organization, Grammar-level of writing, Citations in Text and quotations are correct, Reference Page with minimum of 8 required sources. MINIMUM 5-6 PAGES.

ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE IN THE PROPER APA FORMAT, TITLE PAGE, ABSTRACT, AND REFERENCE PAGE. IF NOT IN PROPER FORMAT, THE ASSIGMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE

CRJ3550: Final Paper – Due Wednesday 9pm

For your final project will be on a “Trial Court Judge” . Write a research paper containing the following sections:

PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROFESSION

·         Address the day-to-day responsibilities of a person in the profession.

HISTORY OF THE PROFESSION IN THE UNITED STATES

·         Give me a description of how the profession developed in this country (many of our court professions had their roots in England; I want to know how the profession developed here at or near the time of the revolution or if the profession developed later as a result of later court / societal reforms).

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION

·         Will you be qualified for the profession when you complete your degree?

·         Will you need another degree to pursue this profession?  Another training program?  How would you make a career in the profession you’ve chosen a reality?

·         What would be the approximate cost of this further training / education (if necessary)?

JOB POSTINGS

·         List three job postings for your chosen profession (anywhere in the United States).

·         Research and state realistic salary ranges for your chosen profession.

Each section is required; failure to include a section will result in an automatic letter-grade reduction (in other words, if you would have otherwise received a B on the paper, you will receive a C).

Sources:

This is a research paper, not an opinion paper.  I expect to see citations to sources backing up the assertions in your paper.

You must use a minimum of five sources other than your textbook.  Three of these sources must be books; two may be periodicals, internet sources, or another kind of source (you may, of course, use more than five sources).  Wikipedia is not a legitimate research source; citations to Wikipedia will result in a five-point grade reduction. You may, however, use actual Encyclopedias – like Encyclopedia Americana.  You may interview someone who works in the profession that you chose and use that interview as one of your sources.  Your citations, like all of your paper, must be in APA format; use in-text citations throughout the paper and a Reference List at the end of your paper. The reference list does not count towards the page limit.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  It is critical that you be able to intelligently communicate in writing.  I will be grading your spelling, grammar, and sentence structure in this paper. Revise the paper before you turn it in.

MINIMUM OF 6-9 PAGES. Not to include, but must have Abstract, Title Page, & References
