Unit 7 DB
Unit 7.1 DB: STEM Education
This week’s unit provides multiple sources explaining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and its developmental appropriateness for young children. STEM curriculum should occur in young children’s daily life experiences. In preparation for this discussion forum, review the unit resources about STEM to gain a working knowledge of the four integrated fields of study (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Using the unit resources about STEM activities identify one activity that you would implement for a young child between the ages of 3 and 8 years old. Post the following in your discussion thread: The resource you used, the title of the activity and the specific STEM field of study (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) that the activity represents. Explain what the activity (objectives and lesson content) teaches you about STEM’s application within the curriculum to support children’s construct of knowledge. Discuss the developmental appropriateness of the activity for young children and explain one modification that you would make to the activity to include a child with a fine motor delay.
In your three responses to peers and/or instructor, recommend an addition to the activity that your classmates chose to incorporate other subjects (arts, math, science, language, etc.) not represented in the activity. Also, as technology is a major field of STEM, explain your thoughts regarding the developmentally appropriate use of technology with young children, including when and how technology should be used in the classroom.
