Week 2 – Discussion 2 – HR Dev and Change – Initial Post Due tomorrow
Week 2 Discussion
Why and How Do People Learn?
The objective of training is to impart a specialized skill or competency to the trainees. An effective training module addresses the training needs of the participants. To make a training module effective, it is important to first conduct a training needs analysis. As part of this Discussion, choose topics that focus on why and how a training needs analysis should be conducted and how effective training programs can be created.
Based on your reading for this week:
Select at least one topic from the assigned chapters that is of particular interest to you. Prepare a substantive response describing a real-world situation—either from your own experience or from an item in the news that addresses some of the primary concepts covered in that topic. For example: What learning theory or theories have you observed being demonstrated in the actions of members of an organization (without identifying people by name)? What is the relationship between learner motivation, learning styles, and the selection of the type of training used?
Post by Day 3 a substantive response of approximately 200–250 words that is an analysis of your chosen real-world situation. Your analysis should include the following:
- Briefly describe the learning and training development topic, including identifying connections to the course text.
- Analyze the illustrative real-world situation, including background and relevant context to the chosen topic.
- Explain how the real-world situation clarifies or exemplifies the concepts in your selected topic, providing supportive examples and credible evidence as needed.
Use the Week 2 Discussion Template (located in this week’s Learning Resources) to develop a draft of your response. Then, post your finalized statement to the Discussion Thread.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.
Respond by Day 6 with at least 75 words each to two or more of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:
- Ask a probing question.
- Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
- Offer and support an opinion.
- Make a suggestion.
- Expand on your colleague’s posting.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what insights you gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the Learning Resources and any additional sources.

Readings
- Blanchard, P. N., & Thacker, J. W. (2013). Effective training: Systems, strategies, and practices(5th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice-Hall.
- Chapter 3, “Learning, Motivation, and Performance” (pp. 56–88)
Chapter 3 provides an exploratory framework for creating effective training processes by analyzing what motivates learners, how learning occurs, and what factors affect the learners’ performance post-training. The chapter also describes how to correlate office environmental factors and the effectiveness of training for employees.
Focus on the various theories that determine the implementation of training processes. Note how each theory is related to a particular situation, and understand the consequences of inappropriately using each theory.
- Chapter 4, “Needs Analysis” (pp. 89–143)
Chapter 4 assesses the requirements for analyzing the need for employee training. The chapter also explains various factors involved in conducting a training needs analysis (TNA) and the methods of conducting a TNA.
Focus on the reasons, situations, and framework for conducting a TNA. This information will help you decide when, why, and how to conduct a TNA in a real-life situation. In addition, go through the two approaches to TNA, which will help you decide the output of your TNA in a real-life situation.
- Chapter 5, “Training Design: Developing Objectives” (pp. 152–157)
Focus on this section of Chapter 5 to prepare for your Week 2 Assignment.
- Chapter 3, “Learning, Motivation, and Performance” (pp. 56–88)
