Watch the video. It is a narrative about George’s Trains. You will not get a lot of numbers, but more generalities. It will be up to YOU to fill in the blanks. Any numbers are fine – it is how you present the examples that will be what matters.
The key here is, YOU as a managerial consultant are coming in to help out George. George has got a good thing going, but there are some areas where George needs improvement. So there are three parts:
Part 1 – Educate George about working capital, and how his store practices working capital management. You need to provide sufficient background as to how working capital works.
Part 2- Once you have schooled George a little, what kinds of problems could he experience? Does George run into the risk of bankruptcy?
Part 3 – Now you get to practice assembling a statement of cash flow. There are no right or wrong answers here since you are making this stuff up. But you want to show George how all these pieces work together to manage working capital.
The number one issue I typically see is that there was no attempt to assemble a statement of Cash Flows. I do not give credit for portions of the assignment that were not attempted. Please do not contact me if you got a failing grade but did not attempt to assemble a statement of cash flows.
Another issue I see is that there is no linkage to the week’s readings from the text. You need to support your observations.
